European Aluminium - aluminium innovation workshop

Innovation Workshop connects Aluminium Industry with Research Experts

Around 60 industry and research experts attended the European Aluminium’s Innovation Hub workshop, jointly organised with Professor Friedrich (IME Process Metallurgy and Metal Recycling, RWTH Aachen University) and the Open Innovation Research Cluster AMAP GmbH. It took place on 21 June at meeting rooms of AMAP in Aachen, Germany.

The workshop aims at encouraging collaboration with aluminium industry and to initiate project ideas, potentially under the Horizon 2020 framework programme. Experts from research and technology organisations and universities presented new ideas and concepts to industrial experts from company members.

Topics included melt purification, dross and bottom ash recycling, process optimisation and modelling, sensors and digitalisation and joining issues. Three parallel sessions addressed challenges specific to primary production, recycling and manufacturing.

30 people from universities and companies visited research laboratories of IBF (Institute of Metal Forming, RWTH Aachen University) and of IME and equipment for hydro- and pyrometallurgical research activities were introduced to the participants.
